Painting: The Stonemason's yard, 1726-30
This painting, also known as "Venice: Campo S.Vidal and Santa Maria della Carità" is considered Canaletto's masterpiece. Students may look at it for a minute and then try to remember as many details as possible: architecture, people, costumes, activities, time and place... After eliciting it is 18th century Venice, we may focus on what kind of view this is and who might have commissioned it. To find it out we can read the historical notes about the painter and the city.
